The Panchanga: Five Limbs of Time Explained

June 23, 2026 · 6 min read

In Vedic astrology, time isn't a blank line — it has texture, flavor, and direction. The Panchanga (पञ्चाङ्ग) is the tool that reads that texture. It breaks every moment into five measurable qualities, each revealing something about the energetic signature of now.

1. Tithi — The Lunar Day

Tithi is the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon, divided into 30 segments. The waxing (Shukla Paksha) tithis are generally more favorable for beginnings, while waning (Krishna Paksha) tithis suit completion and release.

2. Vara — The Weekday

Each day is ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). Match the day to your intention.

3. Nakshatra — The Lunar Mansion

The Moon travels through 27 nakshatras. Each is a distinct energy field. Ashwini is fast and healing. Bharani is transformative. Krittika is sharp and cutting. Knowing the nakshatra tells you the mood of the moment.

4. Yoga — The Combination

Yoga is the sum of the Sun and Moon's longitudes, divided into 27 segments. Each yoga has a name and meaning — some are highly auspicious (Siddha, Sadhya), others cautionary (Vyaghata).

5. Karana — The Half-Tithi

Each tithi splits into two karana, giving 60 total cycles. This refines the timing further.
